Isabella's Reading Corner: Snow Like Ashes (Snow Like Ashes #1)

Snow Like Ashes (Snow Like Ashes Series - Book 1) by Sara Raasch
Published October 14th 2014 by Balzer + Bray

Snow Like Ashes is a Young Adult Fantasy novel set in the world of Primoria which is made up of four Season kingdoms and four Rhythm kingdoms. The kingdom of Winter was overthrown by Spring, it’s ruler murdered and the majority of it’s people enslaved. Sixteen years later it is up to the remaining seven refugees to save Winter and free their people.

The story is told through Meira, one of the survivors. She is such an amazing character – strong willed, brave and a warrior. You see everything and everyone through her eyes. The story unfolds as she discovers more and more about a home she knows very little about. All the characters seemed so genuine that I really cared about what happened to them - aside from the villains!

I love snow, I love cold weather and winter is my favourite season, but these are not the only reasons I loved this book. It was action packed from start to finish. I didn’t want it to end! There is romance and a love triangle, but it is believable and doesn’t take over the story. The world created was scenic and well developed and it was easy for me to immerse myself in this exciting novel.

I can’t wait to get started on the second book in the series, Ice Like Fire, to see what happens next. I highly recommend Snow Like Ashes, especially if you are fond of Fantasy or Young Adult Fantasy Fiction.

From the publisher:
A striking fantasy tale of dark magic, dangerous politics, and discovering your true self—perfect for fans of Game of Thrones, An Ember in the Ashes and A Court of Thorns and Roses.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now the Winterians' only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter's magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.
Orphaned as an infant during Winter's defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, Winter's future king—she would do anything to help Winter rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter's magic, Meira decides to go after it herself—only to find herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics—and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.
